
Salicylic Acid (BHA)
The one widely used cosmetic acid that mixes with oil. That is why it reaches where water-soluble acids cannot - inside the pore.

If your skin is shiny by midday, the pores on your nose look congested and blemishes keep appearing on your chin, you have probably tried an acid already. And probably the wrong one. Most popular acids dissolve in water and work on the skin surface. Salicylic dissolves in oil - and that is precisely what makes it different.

What Salicylic Acid Is
Salicylic acid is an active ingredient classified in cosmetics as a beta hydroxy acid, or BHA. It is used at low concentrations - typically between 0.5% and 2% in home-care products - and plays two separate roles: it exfoliates, and at the same time helps skin look calmer.
Why it is called a BHA
The name comes from where the hydroxyl group sits relative to the acid group in the molecule. In alpha hydroxy acids the two are adjacent; in beta hydroxy acids they are one position apart. That is a chemical detail, but it has an entirely practical consequence: a different structure brings different solubility, and solubility decides where in the skin an ingredient can reach.
Oil Solubility Is the Whole Difference
Glycolic, lactic and mandelic acid dissolve in water. They work well on the surface of the stratum corneum, smoothing and evening tone - covered in detail in our article on AHA acids. But pores are not full of water. They are full of sebum, which is oil. And a water-soluble acid does not mix with oil.
Salicylic acid does mix. So it can pass through the sebum in the pore and act inside it, not only at its opening. That is the only substantial difference between BHA and AHA, but almost everything else follows from it.
What follows in practice
AHAs suit you better when the concern is tone, roughness and a generally dull look. BHA suits you better when the concern involves oil: shine, visible pores, blackheads, blemish-prone skin. The two are not competitors - they solve different problems.
What It Does Inside the Pore
A pore is a channel lined with the same cells that cover the rest of the skin. When those cells do not shed on time and mix with sebum, the channel narrows and its contents become visible from outside as a blackhead or as a rougher, uneven surface.
Salicylic acid loosens the bonds between those cells inside the channel and helps clear it. The visible result is a less pronounced look to the pores and skin that feels smoother. It is worth saying plainly, though: pores do not "close" and their size does not change permanently. What changes is how full they are.
Its second action is soothing. Salicylic acid is structurally related to the salicylates and, at cosmetic concentrations, helps skin look less reddened around blemishes. That is why it persists in formulas for irritation-prone skin, not only in those for oily skin.
Concentration: Why 2% Is the Practical Ceiling
In home care, salicylic acid rarely exceeds 2%. That is not a marketing decision but the point beyond which the balance between benefit and irritation risk turns over. A higher concentration does not deliver a proportionally better result - it delivers a higher chance of dryness and tightness.

Concentration alone is not enough information
The same percentage can behave very differently depending on the pH of the formula and on whether the product is rinsed off or left on. A 2% leave-on lotion does more work than a 2% foam that sits for half a minute and is washed away. Comparing by number alone is therefore misleading.
Salixin and Willow Bark
In the Collagena Professional range, salicylic acid appears as Salixin - a source derived from white willow bark (Salix alba). Willow bark is the historical source of the salicylates and is still used in cosmetics as a gentler route to the same chemistry.
The practical difference: plant-derived sources are usually tolerated more calmly but act more gradually. If your skin is reactive, that is an advantage. If you want a fast, decisive effect on congestion, you will probably need a more direct formula.
Who It Suits
Salicylic acid is the logical first choice for oily and combination skin, for visible pores in the T-zone, for blackheads and for blemish-prone skin. It also suits the back and shoulders, where the same type of congestion is common and hard to reach with anything else.
Who it is not for
If your skin is dry, tight after cleansing or its barrier is compromised, BHA will make things worse before it makes them better. In that case start by restoring the skin barrier, not with exfoliation. For very sensitive skin, mandelic acid is a more sensible starting point.
Salicylic acid is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding without a doctor consultation, nor in products for young children. If you take medicines containing salicylates or have a known sensitivity to them, consult a doctor before use.
How to Introduce It
In the evening, on clean dry skin, twice a week to begin with. If your skin is behaving calmly after two or three weeks, the frequency can go up. Many people settle at every other day, and that is entirely sufficient - daily use is not a target to chase.
Rinse-off or leave-on
A cleansing format is the gentlest introduction: contact time is short and the risk of over-exfoliating is small. A leave-on lotion does more work and is the next step, once the cleanser stops making a difference. There is no need to use both at once from the start.
What Not to Combine It With
Do not pair salicylic acid with retinol, other direct acids or high-strength vitamin C in the same evening. Each of these is active on its own; together they load the barrier more than skin can compensate for.
Split them across evenings. The combination that does work in the same evening is salicylic acid plus something soothing and hydrating - niacinamide, say, or a light oil-free gel.
Sun Protection Is Not Optional
Any exfoliation leaves skin more vulnerable to sun. If you use an acid in the evening and go out unprotected the next day, you undo much of the point of it and risk further pigmentation. Why that happens is explained in our article on sun damage.
When You Will See a Result
The feeling of smoother skin comes quickly, often within the first few applications. A visible change in how pronounced pores look and in how often blemishes appear takes longer - usually four to eight weeks of regular use. If nothing has changed after two months, the issue is probably not exfoliation and it is worth looking for another cause.
In the first two weeks, blemishes that were already forming under the surface may come up. This is transient and is not a reason to increase frequency - rather the opposite.
BHA, Azelaic or AHA: How to Choose
If the leading complaint is shine and congested pores, choose BHA. If it is uneven tone and marks left behind by blemishes, azelaic acid covers both at once and is well tolerated by redness-prone skin. If it is roughness and dullness without oiliness, choose an AHA.

Signs You Are Overdoing It
Persistent tightness, flaking, stinging when you apply products you normally tolerate, unusual redness, skin that has suddenly become oilier than it was. That last one is often misread as a need for more exfoliation, when it means the opposite.
If you see these, stop the acid for one or two weeks and stick to cleansing, moisturising and sun protection. Reintroduce it at a lower frequency than the one that got you there.
Salicylic Acid for the Scalp
The scalp is skin, and the same mechanism applies there. That is why salicylic acid appears in shampoos for oily roots and for dandruff: it loosens accumulated flakes and helps them wash away rather than cling along the hair shaft.
In Short
Salicylic acid is oil-soluble and therefore acts inside the pore, not only on the surface. That makes it the most appropriate acid for oily skin, visible pores and a tendency to blemishes. Work with low concentrations, low frequency and non-negotiable sun protection. Do not combine it with retinol or other acids in the same evening, and on dry or compromised skin it is not the first step at all.

05Does salicylic acid shrink pores?
No. Pore size is an anatomical characteristic and no cosmetic changes it permanently. What changes is how full the pore is - once its contents clear, it looks less pronounced and skin feels smoother. The effect is maintained with regular use and is lost if use stops.
