02 / Deep Cleansing Therapy for Acne-Prone and Problematic Skin
The ideal profile
Suited to teens and adults with mild to moderate acne (grade I,II), oily and problem skin, enlarged pores, comedones, and periodic inflammatory papules. Also works well for hormonal acne in adult women (25-40), usually showing up on the lower face and around the chin, that specific location is a strong signal of a hormonal driver. Also fits people with "makeup acne", breakouts from heavy bases or extended face-mask wear (medical staff, service sector). Stress-driven acne responds well too, because we clear the pores and reduce the inflammatory load on the barrier. Also suitable for teens over 16 with parental consent, usually enough for mild cases and without needing systemic treatment. For severe acne with deep cystic lesions (grade III,IV) we recommend the 12% AHA Acne Therapy first, then maintenance with the deep cleansing protocol. Before a first session we assess severity and set a plan, a single session rarely solves a long-term problem; we usually talk about a course of 4-6 sessions. Bring information about your home routine, medications (contraceptives, antibiotics), and acne history to the consultation; all of those factors shape the protocol choice.
When to postpone
We do not perform the therapy with severe cystic acne with active abscesses, with diagnosed rosacea in flare-up, during early pregnancy (azelaic acid is not recommended), on open wounds, or with active skin infections. If you are on isotretinoin (Roaccutane) or stopped less than 6 months ago, wait, the skin is thinned and cannot handle manual extraction. Allergy to salicylic, azelaic, or AHA acids, yes. After laser, 14 days. After injectable botox or fillers, 7 days. Active herpes simplex in the mouth area, wait 7-10 days for full healing. Heavy sweating or recent intense sport before the session, wait 2 hours for capillary circulation to settle so extraction is precise. Wearing a face mask all day (at work) can flare acne in the mask zone, note this when planning the course.
Expectations and plan
A single session leaves the skin visibly cleaner for 7-10 days. Real improvement comes with a course of 4-6 sessions every 14-21 days plus consistent homecare. Expect fewer new comedones and inflammations, finer pores, and more even tone. After the first session the skin looks cleaner and pores look finer for 7-10 days; after the third, noticeably fewer new inflammations; after the full course, stably clearer skin with up to 60-70% less acne. The therapy is NOT a substitute for medical care for severe hormonal or cystic acne, that calls for a dermatologist. Without homecare (BHA, azelaic acid, a diet without high refined sugar) the effect fades within weeks. Read how it works in the salon and the aftercare plan. Between sessions we often add the Soothing Therapy for redness. This therapy does not replace medical care for hormonal acne, those cases may need a dermatologist and possibly contraceptives. Maintenance every 4-6 weeks after the course. Expect not "perfect skin" but realistic improvement in clarity and texture. All protocols: catalog. For homecare, see the acne page.
Who gets the best results
From our practice, three client profiles get the strongest result from deep cleansing therapy. First: a woman aged 32-40 with early aging signs and an active home routine, for her, the cumulative course effect is most visible because the skin already works with actives and takes professional signals better. Second: a 40-50 year-old who has not had professional therapies before but has healthy, well-maintained skin, for her the first session often delivers a surprisingly strong effect because there is no built-up resistance. Third: a client over 50 with specific concerns (loss of density, uneven tone, fine lines), for her we work in a long course and pair with other protocols; the accumulated improvement over 3-4 months is significant. Who does not get the strongest result: women who try a single session just to test without home follow-up, or clients with a very thin barrier from aggressive home actives, for those we first restore, then stimulate. If you recognise yourself in the first three profiles, your chances of a real result are very high. If you recognise yourself in the fourth, say so at the consultation and we will start with a gentler protocol that prepares the skin for sharper sessions later. For the full candidate profile see the who-it-is-for article.
Compared with alternative protocols
We often get asked how deep cleansing therapy compares with our other therapies. Compared with acne therapy with AHA 12% this therapy fits a specific skin profile and a specific goal better. The two therapies are not interchangeable, they work on different mechanisms and we often combine them in one course for a fuller effect. The choice depends on three factors: your goal (glow, rejuvenation, lifting, tone evening), your skin type (normal, dry, oily, sensitive), and your skin history (have you had professional therapies before, do you use actives at home). At the consultation we review these three factors and propose a specific plan, often a combination of 2-3 therapies in a course that work synergistically. We do not recommend a one-size-fits-all therapy, results are much better when the protocol is specifically chosen. If you have had professional sessions before and know how your skin reacts to actives, say so, it speeds up the choice and often lets us start with a sharper plan from the start. See our full protocols catalog for a detailed comparison between therapies.
What we do not promise
Honestly, deep cleansing therapy will not do everything. It will not remove deep structural wrinkles, those need a dermal filler or a surgical approach. It will not clear persistent dermal pigmentation (chloasma, melasma), those need specialised medical care and often a combination of mesotherapy and medication. It will not erase acne scars, for those we work in a course with collagen-stimulating protocols over months. It will not prevent future aging or stop time, it works with the current state of your skin, not your genetics. It will not deliver a result that holds for 6 months from a single session, without maintenance, the effect fades gradually. What it does is real and measurable: improved texture, plumper and brighter skin, visibly evened tone, softened fine lines, and a younger-looking contour for a defined period. We find it more important to describe exactly what you will get than to over-promise and disappoint. If you have goals that do not fit this therapy, we will tell you at the consultation and direct you to the protocol with the best chance of delivering what you are looking for. A comparative overview of all our protocols is in the catalog.
