What lies behind blemishes
Four things come together: more active oil glands, dead cells shedding too slowly, a blocked pore and inflammation. Hormones, stress and some pore-clogging products act on each of them. The different kinds of blemish are explained in types of blemish and acne.
The commonest mistake is stripping the skin: harsh cleansing, alcohol and no cream at all. The result is irritated, dehydrated skin, not less sebum. Light hydration is not the enemy of oily skin, it is part of caring for it.
A routine the skin can take
Morning: gentle cleansing, a light serum with niacinamide, a fluid with sun protection. Evening: cleanse, an exfoliant twice a week, then a light cream. Exfoliating lotions with salicylic and azelaic acid are used in a salon, under supervision. Individual blemishes are spot-treated, not covered over the whole face.
With moderate or severe acne, with painful nodules under the skin or with scarring, home care is not enough and the question is one for a dermatologist. Care at home sits alongside that treatment rather than in place of it.
