Where the spots come from
Melanin is the skin's own protection against ultraviolet light. When the cells that make it switch on in separate places, darker patches appear: sun spots on the cheekbones and forehead, marks left by acne or inflammation, melasma during a hormonal change or pregnancy. Different kinds of spot behave differently. Marks left by acne usually fade on their own, though on a darker phototype that takes longer; sun spots stay, and melasma is prone to returning with sun exposure, and with heat and visible light too. That is why daily sun protection is part of the care and not an extra on top of it.
How to put the routine together
Morning: cleanse, a vitamin C serum, a cream and factor 50 sun protection. Evening: cleanse, a product with niacinamide or with acids, then a cream. Introduce one active at a time and watch how the skin takes it.
A change in how the tone looks builds up gradually with regular use rather than in days; how quickly it shows depends on the kind of spot and how deep it sits. A new or changing mole or spot is not a cosmetic question and should be shown to a dermatologist. Melasma is diagnosed by a dermatologist too, and the care and the sun protection run alongside the treatment prescribed.
